Course Description:

This 8 hour Concrete Safety Manager Refresher course is approved by the NYC Department of Buildings. The course offers a comprehensive review of the New York City Building Code 3300, New York City Department of Buildings Local Laws and bulletins, and OSHA 1926, subparts C, E, X, Q, R and N. The purpose of the course is to reexamine and update Concrete Safety Managers on safe job practices for New York City major buildings where 2000 cubic yards of concrete are to be poured.

Audience:

This course is intended for workers who are renewing an expired or soon to be expired Concrete Safety Manager license, and have 5 years of construction supervising experience where the concrete portion of the project(s) involved the placement of at least 2,000 cubic yards of concrete.


Please refer to NYC DOB's checklist to ensure that you have all of the appropriate documentation to renew your license. Please also note that we only provide the certificate you need to submit to DOB and NOT the actual license. After completing the course, DOB are the ones that handle your renewal application process.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the students shall be able to:

  1. Explain safety issues in Concrete Operation.

  2. Define OSHA 1926 Subpart C-General (General Duty Clause) and OSHA 1926 Subpart E-PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), providing instruction for Proper use of safety equipment and Life-Saving Equipment related to Concrete Operation.

  3. Identify and discuss the Safeguards provided to equipment stored in public to prevent injury.

  4. Define and apply the standards and regulation as to the safe use of Supported and Suspended Scaffolds.

  5. Explain standards and requirements for fall protection and identify the different types of fall protection and the implementation of these systems.

  6. List and define the general standards as related to concrete operation.

  7. Explain specifications for tests and materials (section BC 1903, 1904, and 1905).

  8. List and apply regulation and standards related to Material Handling Equipment.

  9. List and apply regulations that provide Pedestrian Safety (Flaggers, Sheds, and Barricades).

  10. List and apply regulations and standards related to providing Fire Protection on a construction site.

  11. Recall standards and regulations related to hazards as a result of weather and define the regulation for DOB Wind advisory and how to make safe site and equipment.

 

Methods of Instruction:

A combination of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, open discussions, and testing will be used throughout the course.

Prerequisites:

Students must be able to communicate with the instructor in the language the course is held in and to attain a New York City Department of Buildings certification. Students attending this course should have previously taken a 30 hour Concrete Safety Manager course from an approved training provider within the last 4 years. The expired or soon to be expired card must be presented prior to the start of the course. Students must also have 5 years of construction supervising experience concrete operations. Valid picture ID required

Successful Completion:

In order to receive a certificate/card for the course, students must:

  • Be able to clearly communicate with the instructor and complete all paperwork in the language the course is delivered. No personal interpreters permitted. 

  • Complete all required paperwork: registration, evaluation, attendance, etc.

  • Attend all required hours of the course. Any make up sessions must be completed within six months from the course start date.

  • Participate during class activities and reviews.

  • Complete tests with a passing grade of 70%.

Attendance Policy: 

Students are required to complete 100% of the course and actively participate in all learning activities. Make-up time is permitted only at the discretion of the school's management.

Unsuccessful Course Completion
Students receiving a failing grade on their final exam must take and repay for the course at a later date and time, at the same or then existing current higher tuition price.
